Interview for bauma: "Large mining companies ‘scream’ for systems to increase their productivity"

Mr. Gatzlaff, 2019 is a bauma year. What do you expect from this year's fair?

A trade fair is always an opportunity to check in with what’s happening in the industry: How is the market reacting? How is it changing, for example as a result of the fossil-fuel phase-out and decarbonization? This is a very important issue for us. Also, what trends are emerging in the construction industry, and what new construction machines are available around the world? At bauma in particular, international contacts can be established and global activities can be very well networked: We will present REMA TIP TOP as a global market leader and demonstrate the strength of our product solutions and services to our customers.

Which products and new developments can visitors look forward to at your stand?

At our Stand 437 in Hall B2, we will show our comprehensive REMA TIP TOP product portfolio for the entire value chain of mining, quarries and aggregates, construction, recycling, food, port and chemical industries. Among other things, product highlights such as REMA PERFORMANCE RMS, the new REMAPRESS C and the REMA PERFORMANCEline will be on display. We will also be presenting our range of services for proactive management, for example with our REMA MCube and REMA CCube systems for monitoring conveyor systems.

How do you assess the impact of digitization on mining?

Smart technologies play a major role in mining. These include digital sensor technology as well as automation. In Australia, there are mines in which complete conveyor systems are automatically operated, controlled and monitored from one central control station. Sooner or later, autonomous mines will become the standard – which in turn brings new challenges for maintenance and servicing with it. In the field of sensor technology, we already have an interesting portfolio. Consider, for example, our REMA MCube and REMA CCube systems.

What is your practical experience with the MCube and CCube systems?

The latest example: Recently, together with a group of colleagues from various industries, I carried out thickness measurements of conveyor belts at a facility in Australia. The feedback was clear: The large companies are formally “screaming” out for such systems to ensure and increase productivity. We work together with many global corporations and are therefore able to further develop our systems through constant use and exchange – and adapt them to the needs of the market. Customer demand is high and will grow rapidly throughout the world in the coming years.

At the beginning, you mentioned the fossil-fuel phase-out. How does this affect your work on a national and global scale?

In Germany, the fossil-fuel phase-out is definitely a much-discussed issue. Last year, the last active underground coal mine in the Ruhr area ceased its regular operations. We see this as an opportunity to realign ourselves and to reorganize our global activities and markets. At the same time, lignite mining continues and hard coal is being imported. The share of coal of the net electricity production is estimated 30 percent.

Which raw materials do you see the greatest growth potential for?

This is complex and difficult to assess for the European market, where we have comparatively few mines. In Australia and South America, the need for iron ore and copper requires gigantic production volumes – and the figures continue to rise. BHP recently broke ground in Australia on a $4.2 billion iron-ore mining project, for example. Another major growth market is the extraction of raw materials for worldwide battery production: The demand for lithium, cobalt and rare earths such as scandium is going up fast.

One of the core themes of this year's bauma is sustainability in the mining industry. What contribution can REMA TIP TOP make in this regard?

We produce products that the customer can rely on in the long term. Proactive plant maintenance thanks to modern sensor technology and high quality wear protection products are important elements in increasing sustainability for the customer. With our products, we can optimize critical system components in the plants. Take material transfers, for example. Our wear protection products or premium products for conveyor belt systems (such as belt cleaning systems or pulley laggings) make an important contribution to the sustainable and long-term use of the plants. In addition, we support our customers in environmental protection when they work with hazardous acids or substances: Our highquality tank linings and surface protection solutions guarantee that these are stored and conveyed safely and cannot be released to the environment without control.
