Run Flat
With REMA TIP TOP you can master the constantly increasing handling demands that face you as a tyre dealer (RFT/UHP), and remedy the safety lapses that evaluators are always coming across: serious tyre damage resulting from the mounting and removal process.

The starting situation:
  • Examination of tyre mounting
  • Suspicion
  • Damage
  • Tests
  • Conclusion

Evaluator assignment

Early in 2006 an evaluator assignment on mounting or removal damage to an RFT of the size 205/45R17 84V Mini Cooper, originally mounted on an aluminium rim, initiated a closer look at the subject of mounting RFTs.

Suspected prior damage

As the examination proceeded, there was increasing suspicion of prior damage caused by mounting the tyre on the light-alloy rim.

The answer was produced by examining some 50 other RFTs for mounting and removal damage.

Damage found

Traction point of mounting

Bead heel damaged
Bead broken

Bead worn down despite use of lubricant
Bead base squashed and ripped

Extensive tests

  • Further tests on more than 220 new and 100 used tyres (over 3500 mounting operations) were conducted by Michael Immler, a court appointed expert witness for the vulcanizer and tyre mechanic trade
  • In cooperation with the materials testing institute of Darmstadt University
  • Supported by the Federal Tyre Dealer and Vulcanizer Trade Association (BRV) and the Federal Association of Manufacturers and Importers of Automobile Service Installations (ASA)
  • Coordinated by the Association of the German Rubber Industry (WdK)

Damage very probable

The following variables are responsible for successful and damage-free mounting of RFTs:
  • Design of rim
  • Design of tyre
  • Design of tyre mounting machine including tools and accessories (e.g. paste)
  • Temperature in workshop and in tyre
  • Skill of fitter

If only one of these variables is NOT within specifications, damage to a tyre during mounting or removal is very likely.

Working group for damage-free handling

A working group headed by the WdK was formed with the participation of vehicle, tire and mounting machine manufacturers, BRV, DEKRA and TÜV to produce the following:
  • Mounting and removal instructions for the damage-free handling of RFT and UHP tyres
  • General specifications for mounting machines to handle RFTs
  • Certification procedures for the inspection of mounting machines for RFTs by a neutral official instance (e.g. DEKRA, TÜV)
  • Training and educational strategy
  • Handover of the results to different European organizations
